Red Dot Fundamentals

For shooters moving from irons to a red dot. We cover selection and mounting, zeroing, and the presentation mechanics that make the dot appear where you expect it, then build to one-handed manipulation.

Course Objectives

  • Safety / med brief
  • Equipment discussion, pros and cons, irons vs red dots
  • RDS maintenance
  • Mounting procedure for the RDS
  • Brightness settings (manual vs automatic) and dot-wash considerations in low light
  • Zeroing procedure
  • Finding the dot on presentation
  • Tracking the dot during recoil
  • Re-acquiring the dot after reloads
  • One-handed shooting (dominant & non-dominant side)
  • One-handed weapon manipulation (reloads / malfunction clearing)
  • Chance to win a top shooter patch
  • Weapon maintenance and storage
  • Debrief

Required Equipment

  • Ammunition: 200 rounds
  • Semi-auto pistol equipped with red dot and backup irons
  • Holster — AIWB or OWB Kydex (no leather, nylon, or SERPA)
  • 3 magazines
  • Double pistol mag carrier
  • Eye and ear protection (electronic recommended)
  • Appropriate range attire (no open-toe shoes or low-cut shirts)
  • Hat
  • Lunch & water
  • Pen & paper
